“You don’t know Dan?”

It's an exciting time in the Battle Castle universe - we're just over a week away from our Canadian broadcast premiere Feb. 23 on History Television. Before the show airs, we want to give you a chance to get to know our host, Dan Snow, a little better. In our second instalment, we reveal Dan's Canadian side.

As suggested in our blog post yesterday, Dan Snow is a notable and quotable tv personality out of the UK.  There might be something that you don’t know about him.

He’s also a Canadian.

Here are five of the highlights:

Mom

Dan’s Mother, Canadian Ann MacMillan, is the Managing Editor of the CBC’s London Bureau.

Summer Vacations

As a child, Dan spent many summers on his grandparents’ farm in Maple, Ontario.  During his teen years, Dan struck out further afield and worked as a chambermaid in Mt Assiniboine Provincial Park in British Columbia.  Some duties included washing dishes and changes sheets, but he still found time for hiking and climbing.

Heroes

Growing up, Dan’s hero was Robert MacMillan, his maternal grandfather, who served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II.  Through his stories, he fired Dan’s love of history.

Sieges

With a fascination about sieges throughout the ages, Dan marked the 250th anniversary of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, by researching and writing a book called Death or Victory.

Press

Perhaps even more revealing is an article written by Dan for the English press in which he extolls Canada as a destination for students during their gap year.
